Why does my fish tank water get dirty fast?

I don't know much about fish tanks, but it is possible that you need to change the filter. Inside of it there should be something you can remove and get all the crap cleaned off. In my experience, I just simply couldn't and am now wondering if they are supposed to be disposable. Those are your options, buy a replacement, or remove the sh!t yourself.
